Title:

Catalytic activity and recyclability of polymer supported metal nanoparticles under sustainable conditions


Abstract:

Different polymer supported metal nanoparticles (M-pol, M=Pd, Ni, Co) were synthetized by an uncommon way, i.e. by co-polymerization of the metal containing monomers M(AAEMA)2 [AAEMA− = deprotonated form of 2-(acetoacetoxy)ethyl methacrylate, M=Pd, Ni, Co] with suitable co-monomers (ethyl methacrylate or N,N-dimethylacrylamide) and cross-linkers (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate or N,N’-methylenebis(acrylamide), followed by in situ reduction of M(II) to M(0) under reaction conditions or by calcination at 300°C under nitrogen or dihydrogen, to give polymer stabilized metal nanoparticles. The way of calcination strongly affects the morphology of the obtained metal nanoparticles, thus their catalytic activity. The good swellability in water exhibited by all M-pols rendered them ideal potential catalysts for reactions carried out in a green solvent, such as water, since the migration of the reagents to the active sites would not be hampered by the solid support. With the aim to develop innovative catalytic processes that enable chemical transformations to be performed under mild and sustainable conditions with high efficiency, the catalytic activity of M-pols was evaluated for several important reductive reactions in water. A comparative analysis between Pd-pol, Ni-pol and Co-pol was also carried out.

All catalysts were recyclable for several consecutive runs (for example, at least twelve times in the nitroarene reduction). STEM and TEM micrographs of the resins showed that the catalytically active species were supported metal nanoparticles, which did not aggregate with the recycles.

All these results proved that the proposed metal composite materials are excellent hybrid structures as efficient and reusable catalysts.

In October 2018, Dr. Dell'Anna obtained the National Scientific Enablement as Full Professor in Chemistry and Chemical Foundations of Technologies (CHIM / 07).

• Characterization and dynamics of organometallic compounds through multinuclear 1D- and 2D-NMR spectroscopy.

• Homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis

• Mechanisms in coordination chemistry by means of combined NMR and HR-MS techniques
